By Aaron Humes: According to our unofficial count, there have been six murders across Belize in the month of August. That’s down from the 10 murders reported in the same month in 2023, but up from the two reported in July.
Mark Francisco, 51, was shot dead in the Yabra area on August 4 as he was preparing for a fishing trip. The next day, Manuel Huitz, 54, was found chopped to death in Bella Vista, Stann Creek. On August 6, Carlos Canelo of Orange Walk Town was shot in the same neighborhood as the murder of Norman Gillett five weeks earlier.
At mid-month, another older man, 44-year-old Jennison Vernon, was found floating with cut wounds along the seawall on Front Street, Punta Gorda Town.
Dimetrie Usher was targeted with a high-powered weapon near his Belize City residence, the shooter having fired from Constitution Park. And at month’s end, Cory Anthony Cruz was apparently targeted for his motorcycle in San Ignacio Town.
August is the third consecutive month to report fewer murders than 2023, as the second month of the State of Emergency in Southside Belize City and east-central Cayo District passed without incident.
