By Aaron Humes: The People’s United Party’s Orange Walk standard bearers – two powerful Ministers, one Minister of State, and last but not least the Prime Minister – were all endorsed to run again at the weekend during an official endorsement convention in Orange Walk Town.
P.M. Briceño, who succeeded his father Joe in the central constituency in 1993, expressed pride that his constituency has become such a bedrock for the party: “I humbly accept the nomination to be the standard bearer for Orange Walk Central once again. And yes, we have been winning election after election since 1993, Orange Walk Central [hasn’t] lost a single election, because even when we don’t win town council in Orange Walk Central, we deliver for the People’s United Party. But that is only possible, I am only a small part of that work.”
He made sure to shout out his family members and “the best executive, the best campaigners in the country” as well as the voters of Orange Walk Central. And he reminded that Belize was in such a state when he took over from Dean Barrow that the Government was borrowing a million dollars a day just to pay salaries; the agriculture industry was moribund; the National Health Insurance scheme (NHI) was abandoned; and much worse.
The reversal of fortune in less than four years is due to #PlanBelize, which the Prime Minister reminded will take at least 15 to 20 years to be completed: “#PlanBelize is a transformative document. And I know that the UDP will come to you and tell you, ‘Oh, you said you would do such and such a thing under #PlanBelize and you didn’t get it done.’ #PlanBelize is a plan that will take us 10, 15, 20 years to achieve, [but] look at what we have done. We have reduced our debt from 133 percent of GDP to 67 percent of GDP in three years – no government in the world has done that! When there was 30 percent unemployment and underemployment of another 30 percent – thanks to the People’s United Party, unemployment is three percent! Our people are working and they are happy with the government of the People’s United Party,” he asserted. He was even bold enough to assert that all 31 seats would come to the PUP – something the party hasn’t done since George Price.
A host of party magnates spoke, capped by Briceño and fellow candidates Jose Mai, Ramon Cervantes Jr, and Kevin Bernard. Cervantes noted, “It’s been ten years since we started the march towards victory for the People’s United Party in Orange Walk North. In those times I remember myself. And I think we all remind ourselves that many thought that we could never win, that we were never going to win. The atmosphere was discouraging and the future was dark, but with the encouragement, rigor, and support of you, the northern people, we began to see victory.”
Both Bernard and Mai added that their areas have seen tremendous development, but to borrow a slogan from the other side, the best is yet to come.
