By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On September 2, 2024, through a collaboration between the Ministry of Immigration and the UN High Commission on Refugees (UNHCR), 7 applicants received their Belize Permanent Residency Cards under Belize’s Amnesty Program.
Their new immigration document was handed over by Prime Minister John Briceño and UNHCR Regional Bureau Director José Samaniego, who is on a working visit to Belize.
To date, the Amnesty Program has approved permanent residency for 370 individuals, reflecting the government’s commitment to providing legal standing to those who have made Belize their home despite their previous lack of formal documentation.
