By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: A United Nations report released on Tuesday outlines a severe escalation in Nicaragua’s crackdown on rights under President Daniel Ortega.
Covering the year up to May, the report highlights an increase in arbitrary arrests, torture, and violations of freedom of expression and association.
The report, based on interviews with 120 victims, witnesses, and civil society groups, reveals a sharp rise in detentions of Ortega’s perceived opponents—131 by May, up from 54 the previous year.
According to Reuters, the report also documents at least two enforced disappearances, and further arrests in June and July.
Detailed accounts include cases of torture, such as rapes and electric shocks, with some detainees showing visible signs of post-traumatic stress disorder.
Despite the grave findings, Vice President Rosario Murillo has not responded to the report, and Ortega’s government continues to dismiss UN and OAS reports as part of an international campaign against it.
Since 2018, Ortega’s administration has faced criticism for its violent response to protests, the expulsion of Catholic priests, and the closure of numerous civil society organizations.
