By Aaron Humes: A Security Guard of Belize City is on remand at the Belize Central Prison after being arraigned in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on charges of possession of an unlicensed .38 revolver loaded with six live rounds of .38 ammunition.
30-year-old Kadeem Robert Romero, a resident of Aloevera Street, Saint Martin De Porres area, Belize City, initially pleaded guilty to keeping a firearm and ammunition without a gun license. The weapon was found at his residence on September 1.
Before he entered a plea, Romero said to the court that it was a very sticky situation for him and while he knew it is unlawful to have a gun without a license, he also knew the gun was found in his house and so decided to plead guilty.
Romero asked the sitting Senior Magistrate for an indication as to what the penalty he is facing if he should plead guilty. He was told that the penalty is five years in prison, but he could see a reduction to two years with a plea, but he would not be able to avoid jail.
Romero entered the guilty plea and was read the second charge for keeping ammunition without a gun license for the six live rounds and he inquired if that means additional time. He was told yes but that the sentences may be ordered to run concurrently with each other by the court.
An unrepresented Romero asked if he could take back his guilty plea and so a not guity plea for both offenses was entered on his behalf.
However due to the nature of the offenses, bail was denied and Romero was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until October 25.
