By Aaron Humes: A man who saw the opportunity to snatch a woman’s purse while she stopped to purchase ice cream for her grandson was convicted in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court for theft.
65-year-old Elvis Nicholas of West Street, Belize City was accused on Saturday, August 31 at Golden Sky Supermarket of stealing a purse costing 10 dollars, which contained a $50 bill, a $20 bill, 3 Social Security Cards valued $100, a Public’s Supermarket card and a voters identification card, total value $170, property of Josephine Tesecum.
Nicholas pleaded guilty and asked the court for leniency saying he didn’t see anyone around. He was fined $500 and cost of court due by December 30, 2024, in default, 3 months imprisonment. However court records show that Nicholas was in debt to the court in the sum of $105 since 2018, and he was unable to pay so was remanded.
Josephine Tesecum, a Community Health Worker of Hattieville Village, Belize District, reported that whilst doing some shopping, she stopped at Golden Sky Supermarket at the corner of Euphrates Avenue and Cemetery Road, Belize City to buy Ice cream for her grandson. She noticed a dark-skinned man standing about a foot away from her without any shirt trying to buy something at the same shop.
According to Tesecum, she took out $20 from her purse to pay for items she had bought and walked out of the store to try and catch her bus to reach home. While inside her bus, she realized that her black purse was missing and returned to the store.
She spoke with the owner who allowed her to view the store’s surveillance footage and that’s when she saw the same man who stood next to her earlier at the shop took her purse while she was buying.
