By Breaking Belize News Staff: George Allen Hernandez, a 28-year-old fisherman from Belize City, was arraigned on Wednesday on a charge of theft. Hernandez stands accused of stealing a $50 bill from a police officer.
According to the allegations, on August 29, 2024, the officer entrusted Hernandez with $50 to run an errand for him, but Hernandez allegedly failed to return with either the food or the money. The cop reported the incident after discovering that another officer, who was supposed to receive the food, never did.
In court, Hernandez initially pleaded guilty but later disputed the facts after they were read out. The Senior Magistrate entered an equivocal plea of not guilty on his behalf and offered him bail. Hernandez claimed he did return with the money but did not find the officer at the time.
Hernandez was granted bail in the sum of $800, plus one surety of the same amount, and must report to Precinct 1 Police Station every Friday. However, an outstanding fine of $905 from a previous conviction of negligent harm has complicated his situation. He was instructed to pay $350 toward his old fines to post bail. By noon Hernandez had not made any payments, and defaulting on the fine could result in a one-year prison term. He faces an additional week in prison for an unpaid $55 fine for driving without a license.
Hernandez will remain in custody until his financial obligations are met or his case is reviewed further.
