Alberto August of United Democratic Party charged with aggravated assault of Elections Department officer

By Aaron Humes: Deputy Chairman of the United Democratic Party (UDP), Alberto August, has been charged with aggravated assault against an employee of the Elections and Boundaries Department.

August, also a member of the Elections and Boundaries Commission and its former Chairman, was arrested and charged last week. He is yet to be arraigned before a magistrate but was granted bail by a Justice of the Peace. This is due to a national conference that magistrates are currently attending.

A Cayo resident working at the Bullet Tree Road office told police that Obama August 26 August and others entered the office and began demanding to know whether she had been hired by Cayo North area representative Michel Chebat, and took photos of her.

Earlier this week, the UDP made charges of voter transfer irregularities in the division, but 68 objections were either dismissed or withdrawn when the case was heard on Wednesday. Party Chairman Michael Peyrefitte has called on Chief Elections Officer Josephine Tamai to conduct further investigations.

It is noted that penalties for threatening behavior to public officers was increased by the government through legislation passed earlier this year.
