By Horace Palacio: A 17-year-old University of Belize student died suddenly on Saturday night in Dangriga, prompting a police investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
Darrel Damien Choc, a resident of Belmopan, was rushed to the Southern Regional Hospital by two female friends after experiencing breathing difficulties. Despite medical efforts, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Earlier that evening, Choc had been socializing at a local bar and grill, where he reportedly consumed alcohol and nachos. The group later visited a nearby beach, where Choc is said to have smoked marijuana.
Police have taken statements from Choc’s companions and are awaiting the results of a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death.
Choc’s mother confirmed he had no known medical history.
