By Horace Palacio: Belize will deploy troops to Haiti as part of the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission, joining forces with Jamaica, the Bahamas, and Kenya in an international effort to stabilize the crisis-hit Caribbean nation. The deployment, set to take place by the end of the month, is expected to bolster the MSS mission, which until now has been largely perceived as a Kenyan-led initiative.
The decision follows ongoing unrest in Haiti, where gang violence has escalated, and efforts to restore order have intensified. The MSS mission, led by Commander Godfrey Otunge, is working to reclaim gang-controlled areas and protect key government infrastructure. With Belize’s involvement, the mission aims to present a more multinational front, emphasizing broader international commitment.
“This will give the MSS mission a multinational face that has been lacking,” said Otunge, stressing the importance of Belize, Jamaica, and the Bahamas joining the initiative. He noted that their participation would help reshape the perception of the mission and strengthen its capabilities.
Belize’s contribution, while relatively small, is seen as symbolically significant. The country, which has a history of participating in peacekeeping missions, will assist in securing forward operating bases (FOBs) and holding reclaimed areas to ensure long-term stability.
The MSS mission has also closely coordinated efforts with the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH) to restore order. Despite progress, challenges remain, including securing newly pacified regions and sustaining peace in the face of persistent gang resistance.
