By Horace Palacio: The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is closely monitoring several areas in the Atlantic basin with the potential for tropical cyclone development.
A broad area of low pressure in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico is showing increased signs of organization. The NHC predicts an 80% chance of this system developing into a tropical depression within the next 48 hours and a 90% chance within the next week. This system is forecast to move northwestward and then northward, potentially impacting the Gulf Coast of Mexico and Texas by mid-week. Although this system is not an immediate threat to Belize, we will continue to monitor its progress closely.
Meanwhile, an elongated area of low pressure over the central tropical Atlantic also has a moderate chance of development. The NHC gives it a 40% chance of becoming a tropical depression within 48 hours and a 60% chance within a week. This system is expected to meander for a few days before moving westward.
Finally, a trough of low pressure southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands has a 50% chance of developing into a tropical depression by mid-to-late week. While development is not expected in the next couple of days, this system bears watching as it could eventually move into the Caribbean.
The situation is constantly evolving, and the NHC will continue to issue updates. We encourage all Belizeans to stay informed about the latest forecasts and be prepared, as the peak of the hurricane season is still upon us. Remember, it only takes one storm to make it an active season. Stay safe, Belize!
