By Aaron Humes: On this Tuesday morning Belize observes the 226th anniversary of the Battle of St George’s Caye, which ended in victory for the native Belizean settlers over an invading Spanish force from Mexico.
Mayor of Belize City Bernard Wagner made note that the Battle had high stakes for all involved, but most especially the enslaved who were drafted in by their masters to man the boars and drive back the enemy. They had every right to resist with the possibility of freedom in their sights, he said, but they took the patriotic route and eventually gained their freedom.
Today’s Belizeans have our own battles to fight, on new battlegrounds with advanced technology such as artificial intelligence and electric transportation. To those who fear change and wish to stay in their comfort zone, he said, remember the courage of the victors at St George’s Caye, who fought for their dreams and reached across the aisle, as we must.
