By Aaron Humes: The tables have turned, said Minister of Culture Francis Fonseca, as the former seat of colonial power plays host not only of today’s ceremonies, but also the repository of Belize’s cultural tapestry – art and music.
Today’s Belizeans, he said, must take care to participate and preserve what makes us Belizean – our environment, our culture, our democracy. Independence is not merely the absence of colonial rule, but the presence of an informed, active and engaged populace, willing to ask what future we leave to our children.
Fonseca called on Belizeans to begin that participation and to fulfill the promise of 1798 and 1981.
