By Horace Palacio: Today marks the 23rd anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks—an event that forever changed the world. As the world reflects on the devastating loss of nearly 3,000 lives, Belize also remembers one of its own who tragically perished that day—Alva Jeffries.
Jeffries was working on the 96th floor of the North Tower at the World Trade Center in New York City on that fateful morning. Like so many others caught in the horror of that day, she never made it home. Her death was a heartbreaking loss not only for her family but also for the Belizean community, a reminder that the tragedy of 9/11 reached far beyond the borders of the United States.
The story of Jeffries has lived on in the hearts of those who knew her and in the broader Belizean consciousness. After her passing, a tribute was made when the Belize flag, flown at the World Trade Center in her memory, was brought back to Belize as a symbol of remembrance. It stood as a powerful gesture of unity and shared grief, a way for Belize to acknowledge the profound impact of that day.
As we look back on 9/11, the memory of those lost, including Jeffries, reminds us of the global scale of the tragedy. While years have passed, the pain and loss remain fresh for many, but so too does the resilience and spirit of those who survived and continue to honor the memory of their loved ones.
Today, as Belize joins the world in solemn remembrance, we hold Jeffries and all the victims of 9/11 in our hearts, honoring the sacrifices made and the enduring hope that came from such darkness. Though separated by distance, the ties that bind us remain strong, and Jeffries’ legacy continues to be a lasting symbol of that connection.
