By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: UDP Deputy Chairman Alberto August has expressed his support for UDP Leader Shyne Barrow and the UDP leadership executive amidst internal rifts. This position was taken by August after he initially supported and campaigned for Tracy Taegar-Panton during the contested leadership convention that the party had in 2022.
Standard bearers Tracy Panton, Beverly Williams, John Saldivar and Patrick Faber have called for a “Unity convention” next month but August says that there will be no unity convention for the UDP since they are no longer members of the UDP, and there is only one UDP.
The 4 standard bearers were deemed “constructively resigned” following a request for a national convention and the formation of the Alliance for Democracy.
August says that party leader Shyne Barrow has barely had time to focus on leading the party due to internal rifts.
“Because one of the unfortunate things in all of that, is that since he was elected as leader of the party, he has barely had time to focus on leading the party. What he has spent most of his time on is outing those types of fires that come up from time to time,” August said.
“The division within our party resulted in the same people not coming to the front and shouldering what could have been maybe a better performance for the party,” he added.
