By Aaron Humes: A woman’s apartment in the Buttonwood Bay area of Belize City was invaded and burglarized as over $4,000 worth of jewelry was stolen, and police investigation has led to the arrest of a known criminal figure.
33-year-old Emerson Garnett, a Construction Worker of Green Street, Belama Phase 4 area Belize City appeared unrepresented before a Senior Magistrate where he was read a single charge of burglary.
Allegations are that Garnett on September 1 stole various watches and jewelry at a residence on Dolphin Drive valued at $4,100.
In court, Garnett pleaded not guilty. He told the court that the police picked him up twice for a burglary and released him; then again, this week an off-duty police officer told him he was wanted for a burglary so he decided to go hand himself in. Garnett further claimed that at the station, the officer asked him to give him something so he does not charge him.
The sitting Senior Magistrate granted him bail of $5,000 plus one surety of the same amount despite objection. But Garnett was in debt to the court in the sum of $505 which he could not pay and so he was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until October 20.
