By Aaron Humes, Belmopan: Following Prime Minister John Briceño’s introduction of a motion supporting the recognition of 35 years of diplomatic relations between Belize and the Republic of China (Taiwan), members of the “Opposition” rose in support.
Opposition is in quotation marks above because member for Collet Patrick Faber openly questioned whether he would be allowed to speak, given that he had been removed from the UDP Parliamentary Caucus as was Taegar-Panton, and so was not aware of the Party’s official position.
Nonetheless, he spoke of Belize and Taiwan’s ties in education, recalling his own time as Minister of Education when he presided over ceremonies sending off many students to Taiwan for higher education.
Meanwhile, Taegar-Panton issued support and specifically mentioned the contributions of incumbent Ambassador Lily Hsu.
Earlier this year, President William Lai was elected to succeed Tsai Ing-Wen in a democratic election amid saber-rattling from the People’s Republic of China (PRC).
