By Aaron Humes: In response to the Leader of the Opposition Moses “Shyne” Barrow criticizing the $6.9 million spent on land near the George Price Highway location for the future University Hospital in Belmopan and suggesting corruption is the only explanation, Deputy Prime Minister Cordel Hyde reminded him that this Government has done more for education and health than any other.
Hyde said there is no rule that a medical center has to be on a University campus, and that the motion for the Saudi loan stated that the hospital would be built “in the Belmopan area.”
Hyde reminded that the original offer from the University meant that workers would need to commute six miles in, and that additional land would be needed to reach the area.
The chosen parcels were two of only six accessible not only from the major highways, but from within Belmopan – key to the Government’s wish to have access.
As to the valuation, the Minister for Natural Resources pointed out that all the land available between Hector Silva Airstrip and Guanacaste Park is private land, not national, and that in the capital, who wants land must pay for it, whether or not it is compulsorily acquired. But if they are willing to sell, then the Government must be willing to pay.
Hyde cited other cases of land sold recently within Belmopan concluding that land is not cheap and will cost “a pretty penny”.
