By Horace Palacio: In a heated parliamentary session on Friday, Prime Minister John Briceño took a moment to deliver a serious critique of the opposition United Democratic Party (UDP), calling on them to “get it together” amid ongoing internal turmoil.
During the House meeting, the Prime Minister reflected on the current state of the UDP, expressing a sense of disappointment. “I just can’t help but feel a sense of sadness,” Briceño remarked, following a debate that saw government members laughing at the opposition’s struggles. He went on to invoke Belizean heroes, Sir Manuel Esquivel and Phillip Goldson, questioning what they would think of their party’s present condition. “It’s important that you guys get your act together. We need an opposition,” he added.
The Prime Minister also criticized the UDP’s Leader of the Opposition for prioritizing an absentee member over active participants in the party. “A person who has not been in this House for the past three years… and this man, because he wants to spite you, he puts them to sit ahead of you,” Briceño said.
Friday’s parliamentary session highlighted the deepening divisions within the UDP, with Prime Minister Briceño urging the party to unite and embrace reform. He emphasized the importance of having a strong and effective opposition to ensure the health of Belize’s democracy.
