Dancehall superstar Vybz Kartel draws roaring cheers in appearance at Jamaica People’s National Party (PNP) general party conference

By Jose Luis Cruz: Dancehall superstar Vybz Kartel made a high-profile appearance at Jamaica’s People’s National Party (PNP) 86th General Conference, drawing loud applause and cheers from party supporters inside the National Arena. Kartel, alongside his attorney Isat Buchanan, took the stage during the roll call segment of the political event.

As Kartel’s popular music in the arena, the crowd cheered loudly as the entertainer stood on stage, raising his fist in celebration. Sporting his now-signature look of a partially covered face with a handkerchief and sunglasses since his release from prison, Kartel no doubt captured the attention of the audience in the packed arena.

Vybz Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, was imprisoned for over a decade following his conviction in 2011 for the murder of Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams. Earlier this year, the Privy Council overturned his conviction and referred the case to the Court of Appeal to decide if a retrial was necessary. The appellate court ruled that a retrial was not necessary, leading to Kartel’s release from prison in July.

In addition to his appearance at the Jamaican PNP event, Vybz Kartel has also publicly endorsed Shyne Barrow, the Leader of the Opposition in Belize’s United Democratic Party (UDP). Last month, during Barrow’s visit to Jamaica, he met with Kartel, who endorsed him as the next Prime Minister of Belize and referred to him as ‘My brother from another mother’. Barrow, a former rapper, has maintained strong ties with the entertainment world, and Kartel’s endorsement demonstrates the entertainer’s influence beyond Jamaica, extending into the broader Caribbean region.

Kartel’s presence at the PNP conference, combined with his support for Belize’s Shyne Barrow, is a clear sign that the popular dancehall artist intends to use his influence in the political arena in Jamaica, Belize and possibly across the Caribbean.
