By Breaking Belize News Staff: An Asian businessman, 28-year-old Jiahui Chen, is out on bail after being charged with common assault for allegedly attacking a Ministry of Agriculture inspector during a store inspection. Chen, the owner of Bosco Supermarket on Central American Boulevard, is accused of assaulting 36-year-old Nicholas Albert Smith, a Consumer Protection Inspector, on September 7, 2024.
The incident reportedly occurred after Smith discovered irregularities during the inspection, including a missing price on a 16oz pack of bread. When Smith informed Chen he would issue a ticket, Chen allegedly grabbed him by the shirt and attempted to drag him out of the store. Smith contacted his superior, who called the police.
Chen, who appeared unrepresented in court and required a translator, pleaded not guilty. He was granted bail of $1,000 with conditions, including no contact with the complainant. His next court date is set for November 21, 2024.
