By Horace Palacio: The People’s United Party (PUP) and the Dangriga community are mourning the passing of former Area Representative Ivan Michael “Maca” Ramos, a dedicated public servant and politician. Ramos, who represented the Dangriga constituency from 2012 to 2015, passed away, leaving behind a legacy of commitment to his community.
Ramos was elected in March 2012 under the People’s United Party (PUP) banner and served as the Area Representative for Dangriga in the Stann Creek District. His tenure was marked by his dedication to the people of Dangriga, but in June 2015, he made the decision to resign after a controversial period where he failed to retain his standard bearer status for the upcoming general elections that year. A by-election was subsequently held on July 8, 2015, to fill the vacancy.
He was also known for his notable lineage, being the grandson of the renowned Garifuna activist T.V. Ramos, a key figure in the cultural and political life of the Garifuna community.
In a statement from the People’s United Party, Hon. Dr. Louis Zabaneh, the Mayor and Councillors, and the Executive of the PUP, along with supporters and the entire Dangriga Constituency, extended their heartfelt condolences to Ramos’ family. The statement read, “On behalf of Hon. Dr. Louis Zabaneh, Mayor and Councillors, Executive, Supporters of the People’s United Party, and the entire Dangriga Constituency, we extend our deepest condolences to the family of Hon. Ivan Ramos. May his soul rest in peace and rise in glory.”
Ramos’ passing is a significant loss to the Dangriga community and to the broader Garifuna heritage, which he proudly represented throughout his life and career. His contribution to public service and his dedication to his people will be remembered by many.
