By Aaron Humes: 10 thousand cases of Corona beer from Mexico will be imported for local consumption, to the discomfiture of market leader Belikin, produced by Bowen and Bowen Limited.
The Government of Belize has granted conditional approval to Goliath Investments Company of Belize City, allowing the import solely for local consumption with full duties to be paid and the beer to be so labeled.
The approval comes as Belize Brewing Company, makers of Belikin, Lighthouse, Guinness and others, has faced recent production challenges.
The beer does not qualify for reduced tariffs under the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME). Industry estimates suggest that each case could cost around $100 once duties are factored in, making it a costly option compared to local brands.
But Bowen & Bowen is still disappointed over the decision. A company representative noted Mexico’s strong protection of its beer industry and questioned why Belize is not adopting a similar approach to safeguard its own producers.
Today Prime Minister John Briceno told Channel 5 News that the importation has not happened yet and that Bowen has been addressing its production issues. He also tried to spin it as a sign of a growing economy: “they have increased the production and sales have increased. But it seems because of the growth of the economy, we’ve been growing very, very fast. It’s been difficult to catch up.”
