By Aaron Humes: Belize’s health sector is at a ‘nadir,’ according to Leader of the Opposition Moses ‘Shyne’ Barrow, after mismanagement by Michel Chebat in the first year of the Briceno administration – and Kevin Bernard has been no better.
“The Ministry of Health’s report card from 2020 to 2024, has been horrific and unhealthy for the country of Belize. Instead of the health of our people accelerating to the next level, it has deteriorated since November 2020 over the last 47 months under this PUP Government,” Barrow opined in his response to the State of the Nation address.
The recent debacle over the location of the future University Hospital in Belmopan is just the latest in a string of disasters per Barrow, who reminded that there had been continuous medical and pharmaceutical supply shortages countrywide, three Chief Executive officers ‘resigned,’ political hirings and the continued neglect of regional hospitals and the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. This led to walkouts and protests among medical professionals in 2022 and 2023.
While not specifically mentioned, Barrow wrote that the National Health Insurance scheme has been open to non-transparency of process for tenders to provide NHI services and reliance on political cronies to manage the system.
