By Horace Palacio: An inmate accused of defrauding luxury resorts in Belize of tens of thousands of dollars was found dead in his cell early this morning, prompting an official investigation.
Christopher D’Angelo Alverado Marchena, a 40-year-old Costa Rican national, was discovered unresponsive in his cell at the Belize Central Prison around 3:29 a.m. He had been remanded since March 2024 on charges of obtaining property and services by deception.
Marchena was accused of scamming at least two major resorts in San Pedro and Placencia out of accommodations and food worth over 100,000 Belize dollars using fabricated screenshots and promises of payment. He had no known medical history and had attended court the day before his death.
