“We gather here this morning to participate in a tradition that goes beyond a ceremony – the raising of our national flag,” said Karissa Young, President of the Pallotti High School Student Council.
“The flag of Belize represents our country, our people, and our values, all of which unite us! It is the symbol of our pride, history, and commitment to a brighter future.
“The Flag-raising Ceremony is a moment for us to come together and reflect on what it means to be Belizean. Each time our flag rises, it reminds us of our rich history, cultural diversity, and the spirit of unity that defines us as a nation. It represents our struggles, triumphs, and the ongoing journey toward the progress and development of our beautiful country.”

Invited guest archaeologist April Martinez, Co Director at Heritage Education Network Belize and Living Heritage Officer at the Institute for Social and Cultural Research, encouraged the students to be proud of Belize and its culture. She asked them to think about how they would describe their country if asked to say what Belize is like.
Martinez emphasized the importance of remembering the role of women in Belize’s culture and treasuring the stories told by Belizean women over the years.
“We have to recognize the vital role that women play in safeguarding our heritage,” Martinez said, reiterating that women pass on values, morals, languages, and recipes from generation to generation, maintaining Belize’s culture alive.
The PHS Flag Raising Ceremony featured the participation of the Pallotti School Band and Minorettes, who will be leading the school in the Independence Day Parade on Saturday. Students also performed poems and songs during the ceremony, which concluded with the raising of the Belizean flag.
