Police charge Belize City resident with possession of treasure trove of illegal drugs

By Aaron Humes: Police today charged a Belama resident and are looking for her nephew after a bust of various illegal drugs and alleged drug proceeds.

Police began a search with a warrant around 1:35 this afternoon at the Rhamdas Street, Belama Phase 3 residence of Audrey Maheia, 47, who is in a wheelchair. Also living at the residence, but absent at the time, was her nephew, one Sheldon Flowers, whom police are now looking for.

Upon searching the front room in which Flowers lives, police recovered various substances suspected to be illegal drugs. Also monies were found in the room which police suspect to be proceeds of sales of drugs. In the back room which Meheia identified as her room, she was asked if she had anything illegal to declare she uttered “No”. But police found a large box on top of a cupboard covered with with a black garbage bag which contained several rectangular parcels of green leafy substances consistent to cannabis. 

At the Belama Police Station, the drugs were weighed and found to be 2.6 grams of suspected cocaine; 44.8 grams of suspected methamphetamine; 50 grams of suspected cannabis and 16 parcels with a total weight of 18.792 pounds of suspected cannabis. All the drugs were labelled and sealed in individual manila envelopes which was signed by Audrey Maheia, the arresting officer and a justice of the peace. The monies believed to be drug sale proceeds were also counted in the presence of Maheia and the justice of the peace and the Arresting officer which amounted to 13 $100 bills and five $50 bills to a total of $1,550.

Police have formally arrested and charged Audrey Penelope Maheia of Rhamdas Street, Belama Phase 3, Belize City for three counts of possession of controlled drugs with the intent to supply to another and possession of controlled drugs for the smaller amount of cannabis. She was released on bail to appear at Belize City Magistrate Court on Friday,  September 27, to answer to the charges made against her.
