By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Rene Leslie out on a monumental show on Thursday night in Belmopan as he slammed five goals past the Belmopan Bandits’ goalkeeper in Port Layola’s 6-0 pounding of the hosts at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium.
After Latrell Middleton converted the opening goal in the 20th minute, Leslie took over, shaking the net five times in 27 minutes. His onslaught was like a heavy rain on the Bandits, scoring in the 28th, 30th, 51st, 53rd, and 55th minutes.
In one game, Leslie has become the leading goal scorer with seven tallies to his credit.
The Week 8 match was brought forward at the request of the Bandits, whose coach, Dale Pelayo, is traveling to Panama on Friday along with Stars Academy, who are representing Belize in the UNCAF FIFA FORWARD Men’s Under-17 Interclubs Cup.
The victory places Port Layola in first place with 16 points, one more than Verdes (15 points) and two more than Progresso (14), who are set to play this weekend. The Bandits continue in seventh place with four points from eight matches, three more points than last-place Wagiya.
On Saturday, Progresso will host Wagiya at 7:30 pm at the People’s Stadium in Orange Walk Town while on Sunday, Verdes will host the San Pedro Pirates at 4:00 pm at the Norman Broaster Stadium in San Ignacio.
