By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Tropical Storm Helene has created historic flooding conditions across the Southeastern United States, particularly impacting metropolitan Atlanta, upstate South Carolina, and western North Carolina.
As of this morning, Helene was located near latitude 35.1 North, moving northward at approximately 32 mph.
While maximum sustained winds have weakened to 45 mph, flash flood emergencies remain in effect, with expectations of severe flooding continuing throughout the weekend as the storm stalls over the Tennessee Valley.
Helene’s heavy rainfall is projected to accumulate between 6 to 12 inches in affected areas, with isolated totals potentially reaching 20 inches.
This extreme weather is resulting in life-threatening flash and urban flooding, alongside significant river flooding.
Reports indicate that many areas are already experiencing flash flood emergencies, and local authorities are urging residents to take necessary precautions.
In the mountainous regions of the Southern Appalachians, numerous landslides are anticipated due to the saturated terrain.
As Helene continues its path, officials are advising residents to stay alert for updates and to prepare for potential evacuations if conditions worsen.
