By Rubén Morales Iglesias: As the Premier League of Belize looks to complete Week 8 on Sunday, the competition for the top four spots is as tight as can be. At this point, all matches have a significant impact on the standings.

Progresso blanked Wagiya 3-0 at the People’s Stadium in Orange Walk Town on Saturday, September 28, regaining the top spot with 17 points. That may not last for long if Verdes (15 points) manage to beat a resilient San Pedro Pirates (12 points) on Sunday, but Progresso are assured of at least second place for now as Port Layola (16 points) already played their Week 8 match.

Michael Palacio led the Northern side to victory, scoring in the second and 44th minutes on Saturday night. Trimayne Harris added the other in the 41st minute.

Verdes, who relinquished the top spot to Port Layola on Thursday when the Belize City side rammed their way through the Bandits’ defence, or lack of it, beating them 6-0 in Belmopan, have now dropped to third place with the Progresso victory. However, the Green Machine can regain all the lost ground with a win over the fearless Pirates, who have shown much strength and resourcefulness over the last few games.

The match kicks off at 4:00 pm at the Norman Broaster Stadium in San Ignacio. Hopefully, the constant rains don’t out a damper on the match. Verdes management reported that they are hopeful the forecast for no rain during match time holds.

The Pirates will be aiming to disrupt Verdes’ plans and increase their points haul to 15 with a win. That would put them alongside Verdes, but they would remain in fourth place as Verdes have a much better goal difference (+17 to +3).

Incidentally, Port Layola’s dominant 6-0 victory over the Belmopan Bandits on Thursday was highlighted by Rene Leslie’s spectacular five-goal performance.

The Bandits, after their heavy defeat, remain in seventh place with four points, with Wagiya trailing them by three points.

  3. Verdes – 15 points
  4. San Pedro Pirates – 12 points
  5. Belmopan Bandits – 4 points
  6. Wagiya -1 point
