By Aaron Humes: The Government of Belize has expressed grave concern over the escalating violence in the Middle East. A statement issued today, Tuesday, highlights the government’s deep concerns regarding the recent escalation of death and destruction spreading from the Palestinian territories of Gaza to the West Bank, and now to Lebanon.
The government particularly condemned the increasing violence against civilians caused by the Israeli state, citing the weaponizing of civilian devices like pagers to cause indiscriminate slaughter and the continued use of selective assassinations. The government emphasized that such actions threaten to ignite a full-scale conflagration of unimaginable consequences.
The statement labelled the cycle of violence as illegal, immoral, and inhumane, calling for an immediate cessation. The Government of Belize urged Israel to abide by the decisions of the International Court of Justice, agree to an effective ceasefire, allow unimpeded humanitarian aid to flow into Gaza, and lift the illegal siege of the region. Additionally, the government called for the immediate, unconditional release of hostages held by both the resistance groups and the Israeli state.
The United Nations Security Council was also called upon to put their differences aside and, together with the international community, implement resolution 10/24 of the 10th Emergency Session of the UN General Assembly of 18 September 2024. The statement stressed that peace in the region cannot be achieved until Israel abides by the decisions of the United Nations and fully respects the right of the Palestinian people to full self-determination.
The Government of Belize broke diplomatic ties with Israel last November following its heavy-handed response to the Hamas terrorist attacks and kidnappings of October 7, 2023.
