Electric City buses hit twice in 48 hours – security guard pleads guilty in second incident

Posted: Tuesday, October 1, 2024. 8:03 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Just over two months into their introduction to the Old Capital, the Belize City electric buses operated by the Belize City Council have been twice damaged by residents.

It was not widely reported, but an unemployed man of North Front Street was detained for damage to property last week Thursday. While the bus was on Youth for the Future Drive in front of the United Democratic Party (UDP) headquarters, he allegedly stoned the bus, damaging the rear passenger window.

Meanwhile on Saturday, not even 48 hours later, a second road rage incident led to further damage after the bus was hit with a baton which caused one of its doors to break, putting the bus out of business for a while and leading to charges of damage to property against Security Guard 27-year-old Bernard Humes, of Lacroix Boulevard, Belize City.

Humes pleaded guilty this morning to causing criminal damage to one glass window on the bus valued at $1,817.76, property of the Ministry of Finance in the Government of Belize, with intent to damage such property.

He was fined $700 plus cost of court to be paid by December 31, in default six months imprisonment.

Humes told the court that the driver of the bus was driving out of his lane at the same time he was coming out of the Princess Hotel & Casino on a motorcycle. He said he was trying to get the driver’s attention and claimed the glass broke accidentally when he banged on it.

And while Humes said he was willingly to pay back for the damages, the procedure is that a sitting Magistrate cannot order compensation in the sum of over $1,000; however the Prosecutor int he case told the court they were not asking for compensation at the end of the criminal matter.
