By Horace Palacio: Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States and a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, reached his 100th birthday on Tuesday, becoming the first U.S. president to live a full century. Carter, who has spent the last 19 months in hospice care at his home in Plains, Georgia, continues to defy expectations and remains a symbol of peace and democracy around the world.
Born on October 1, 1924, Carter rose from humble beginnings as the son of a farmer during the Great Depression to the highest office in the U.S. After serving a single term as president from 1977 to 1981, Carter spent over four decades promoting global peace and human rights through The Carter Center, which he co-founded with his wife, Rosalynn.
In 2023, Belize honored Carter with the prestigious Order of Belize, recognizing his enduring friendship and support for the country. This award reflects his ongoing work to promote democracy and peace in the region. The U.S. Embassy in Belize noted that Carter’s efforts, such as the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project, have touched the lives of many Belizeans by providing homes and fostering a spirit of humanitarianism.
Carter’s legacy of promoting peace in the Americas, including election missions in the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Panama, has solidified his place in Belizean history. The award was accepted on his behalf by his daughter, Amy Carter, during a ceremony hosted by U.S. Ambassador Michelle Kwan.
As the world reflects on his 100 years of life, Carter’s dedication to a better world continues to inspire generations, with Belize recognizing his exceptional contributions to the region.
