By Aaron Humes: The Fisheries Administrator of Belize has issued a reminder to the public regarding the new conch season, following the Fisheries Resources Act, Chapter 210 of the Laws of Belize.
The conch season officially opened on October 1, 2024, and will run through to June 30, 2025. However, the public has been advised that if the conch production quota is met earlier, the season will be declared closed.
The regulations on Queen Conch (Strombus gigas) are outlined as follows:
1. During the period from July 1 to September 30, inclusive, in any year, no person shall take in the waters of Belize or buy, sell, or have in their possession any conch.
2. There are specific restrictions on the overall shell length and weight of conch that can be taken, bought, sold, or possessed at any time.
3. Diced conch meat may only be bought, sold, or possessed under a special permit issued by the Fisheries Administrator.
4. Export of conch must not exceed the quota granted under the Fisheries Resources Act.
Furthermore, the Fisheries Department urges the public to report any illegal fisheries activity by contacting them at the telephone number 224-4552 or by emailing the provided email address.
These regulations are put in place to ensure the sustainable management of conch populations and to protect this important marine resource for future generations. All members of the public need to adhere to these regulations to support the conservation efforts and sustainable harvesting of conch in Belize.
