By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE), in partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Trade, on Tuesday, October 1, hosted a delegation from the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME) at the Quality Poultry Facility in Spanish Lookout. According to MAFSE, the mission, organized by the CARICOM Secretariat, seeks to strengthen regional cooperation and facilitate the free movement of goods, services, and labour within the CARICOM Single Market.
Minister of Agriculture Jose Abelardo Mai led the Belize delegation, accompanied by CEO Servulo Baeza, Director of Foreign Trade in the Ministry of Foreign Trade Andy Sutherland, Manager of Quality Poultry Raymond Barkman, and key technical officers from both ministries. Their participation underscores Belize’s commitment to fostering agricultural trade and promoting food security throughout the CARICOM region.

The CARICOM Secretariat delegation included representatives such as Assistant General Counsel Gladys Young, Director of the CARICOM Single Market Leo Preville, Specialist in Communications Salas Hamilton, Deputy Programme Manager for Free Movement and Labour Wanya Illes, and Senior Project Officer for Customs and Trade Policy Bernard Black.
MAFSE said the delegation toured the Quality Poultry Facility, one of Belize’s leading agricultural enterprises, known for its modern poultry production systems that play a crucial role in supporting national food security.
Key topics discussed included an overview of Belize’s poultry industry, agricultural development and food security, and the implementation of COTED agricultural policies. These discussions highlighted Belize’s efforts to ensure sustainable agricultural development and food self-sufficiency.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise said it remains committed to strengthening Belize’s agricultural sector and deepening ties with CARICOM partners, marking a positive step toward greater regional collaboration.
