By Aaron Humes: 32-year-old Vanessa Amanda Good is accused of burglary, use of deadly means of harm and grievous harm upon her ex-mother-in-law, who was stabbed once in the chest and is presently in a stable condition at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital.

Good, of Belize City, appeared before Chief Magistrate Jayani Wegodapola for the incident which took place on Wednesday, October 2 at Petticoat Alley, Belize City. The victim is a retired teacher.

The court prosecutor objected to bail citing potential interference with the complainant and the strong possibility that the charges could be upgraded to attempted murder and is already as serious offence. But he noted that it would take another two to three weeks to fully assess the victim’s condition.

The Chief Magistrate then heard from Good, who told the court it was she who was allegedly attacked first by her former mother in law. Good explained that she went to collect money from the woman for her children when she allegedly stabbed her bicycle tire.

Good said she pulled her bicycle away, and she was stabbed in her hand. When she tried to run away and head to the Police Station, the woman’s son allegedly grabbed her and choked her around the neck.

Good said she had been informed by Human Services Department that her children would be moved to their father’s care, which the prosecution said was caused by her own behavior.

The Chief Magistrate ordered a psychiatric evaluation to ascertain her state of mind and set bail of $3,000. She is to stay away from the virtual complainant or any members of her family; she is not to be within 100 yards of the complainant; she must report to the Raccoon Street Police Station every Friday; she is not to be arrested and charge with any other offenses whilst out on bail; and she must remain living at her present address and she cannot change her address without first notifying the court.

Good said, “All I want is to see my boys,” as she began to cry. She is due back in court on December 5.
