By Horace Palacio: Belizean Ambassador Lynn Raymond Young assumed the Chairmanship of the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) on Friday, pledging to focus on poverty eradication and inclusive economic growth during his tenure.

Young, who will lead the Council until December 31, 2024, stressed the importance of empowering vulnerable populations, improving access to education and healthcare, and promoting decent work opportunities. He emphasized Belize’s commitment to the OAS’s core principles of democracy, human rights, security, and integral development, stating that these values will guide his leadership.

Outgoing Chair, Barbadian Ambassador Victor Fernandes, expressed confidence in Young’s abilities and wished him well in his new role. The OAS confirmed that US Permanent Representative Francisco Mora will serve as Vice Chair for the October-December term.

The Chairmanship of the Permanent Council rotates alphabetically every three months among member states, while the Vice Chair position follows the reverse alphabetical order.
