By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Gwen Lizarraga High School are playing Panama’s Gaston Faraudo P. school in the basketball final at the Under 18 CODICADER Games at 2:30 pm on Thursday at the Gimnasio Nacional José Adolfo Pineda in San Salvador, El Salvador.
Gwen Liz qualified for the final after defeating El Salvador’s ITEXSAL 86-79 in the semifinals on Wednesday.
Gwen Liz will have their hands full with the Panamanians, who are the only team that has beaten the Belizean team so far. The Gaston Faraudo P. boys won 98-83 when they faced each other in group play. By now, however, both teams are playing better basketball, so we should expect a highly competitive match.
Whatever medal Gwen Liz wins, it’ll be Belize’s ninth medal at the regional games. It will also be the second gold or the second silver. So far, Belize has won one gold, one silver, and six bronze medals.
Gwen Lizarraga has now won three games: the two first-round games and the semifinal.
In the girls’ competition, King’s College finished seventh after losing the sixth-place game 80-60 against Costa Rica’s Centro Educativo Naranjo Bilingue on Wednesday.
