Ministry of Human Development, Families, and Indigenous People’s Affairs commemorates Indigenous Peoples’ Resistance Day 2024

By Aaron Humes: While Monday is the given holiday, Indigenous Peoples’ Resistance Day is marked on October 12, the day the Italian explorer Christopher Columbus landed in the Americas and opened them to interaction with the Old World, much of which proved destructive and civilization-altering.

The Ministry of Human Development, Families, and Indigenous People’s Affairs joined the people of Belize in honoring the resilience, strength, and invaluable contributions of Indigenous People. The day’s theme, “Protecting the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in Voluntary Isolation and Initial Contact,” emphasized the urgent need to safeguard the collective rights of Indigenous Peoples to their lands and territories. This recognition is crucial for biodiversity and the preservation of cultural and linguistic diversity.

Dolores Balderamos Garcia, Minister of Human Development, Families, and Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs, emphasized the Ministry’s dedication to protecting the rights of Indigenous Peoples and ensuring their voices are heard in every decision-making process. The Ministry aims to work with Indigenous communities to protect their rights, vital for their survival and essential to Belize’s environmental conservation and cultural richness.

Indigenous peoples living in voluntary isolation and those in initial contact were acknowledged as one of humanity’s most distinct and vulnerable groups. Their existence within their ancestral lands is not only a symbol of resilience but a living testament to the incredible diversity of our world. Their survival is essential, not only for their unique cultural heritage but also for the protection of the planet.
