By Aaron Humes: On the advice of the Chief Meteorologist and the National Emergency Management Coordinator, Prime Minister John Briceño advises that the “ALL CLEAR” has been issued for the entire country. This means that the country is no longer under the threat of Tropical Storm conditions.
The National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) in its latest and likely last advisory reports that Nadine has weakened to a tropical depression. All coastal warnings have been discontinued. At 6 p.m. Tropical Depression Nadine was located about 120 miles west of Belize City. Nadine was moving to the west at 13 miles per hour with maximum sustained winds of 35 miles per hour. Nadine will continue moving inland away from Belize while weakening further.
Additional rainfall of 1-2 inches is possible overnight. Winds will be gusty at times and therefore a small craft caution remains in effect. Operators of small crafts are advised to exercise caution. Despite the “All Clear” there still remains the potential for flooding in some parts of Belize including along the Coastal Highway. The San Ignacio Low Lying Bridge remains closed and is impassable. Mollejon Spillway is active.
NEMO and the Ministry of Health and Wellness advise the public that playing, walking, or working in flooded waters is unsafe. Flood waters can be the source of many infectious diseases, chemical hazards, and injuries. Anyone exposed to contaminated flood water can get a wound infection, skin rash, stomach illness, tetanus and waterborne diseases such as typhoid fever, cholera, leptospirosis, and hepatitis A.
