By Aaron Humes: The low-lying Earl Haylock Bridge linking the Twin Towns has been officially closed as the Macal River’s water level continues to rise rapidly. Market vendors in the area are currently evacuating to safer locations to protect their goods and ensure their safety. Additionally, personnel from the Government are relocating recently planted trees from the balcony area near the Macal River Bank to prevent potential damage from the rising waters.
The Belize Police Department reports, “This closure will remain in effect until further notice. Please exercise caution and use alternate routes where available. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we prioritize public safety.”
Residents and businesses in low-lying areas near the Macal River are advised to remain on high alert and take necessary precautions, such as moving valuable items to higher ground and preparing for potential flooding. The public is urged to avoid the riverbanks and follow guidance from emergency services to ensure their safety.
Belize is in all clear following the passage of Tropical Storm Nadine, however rainfall is expected to continue resulting in flooding in central and northern Belize.
