Tropical Storm Nadine crosses Belize, rain and flood alerts still in effect

By Aaron Humes: The National Meteorological Service and National Emergency Management Organization report that Tropical Storm Nadine has picked up speed and is currently at the edge of Belize’s land boundaries.

As of 3 p.m. the storm is located 80 miles west of Belize City, moving westward at 13 miles per hour, with maximum sustained winds of 45 miles per hour. On its current track it is expected to continue into northern Guatemala while also affecting Southern Mexico before dissipating on Sunday.

Rainfall totals of 3 to 6 inches have already been recorded with an additional 2 to 4 inches possible over northern and central Belize. Winds remain strong and gusty on the seas and in central and northern Belize for the next few hours.

A flood alert is in effect for the Coastal Road from La Democracia to Hope Creek junction, the Iguana Creek Bridge at Spanish Lookout and the Low-lying Bridge at Santa Elena Town, and in Sittee River. A flood warning is in effect for communities along the Rio Hondo, New River, Booths River, Rio Bravo, Mopan, Macal and Belize Rivers as well as those off the eastern slopes of the Maya Mountains.
