Man remanded for rape after allegedly attacking woman at her apartment door

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 58-year-old Belize City woman is the latest victim of sexual assault after being ambushed and raped by a man known to her at her apartment on Monday night. The alleged attacker, 51-year-old Cecil Gilbert Franklin, also known as “G.I. Joe,” reportedly forced his way into her apartment at knifepoint before assaulting her.

The victim, who lives on the southside of Belize City, told police that Franklin held a knife to her throat and pushed her inside her apartment, where he threw her on the bed and raped her. A nearby neighbor heard the commotion and alerted the authorities. With the help of a good Samaritan, Franklin was quickly detained and handed over to the police.

Franklin, a well-known figure with a history of criminal convictions for robbery, wounding, and burglary, was brought before the Belize City Magistrate’s Court this morning. He was charged with one count of rape. Due to the serious nature of the offense, no plea was taken, and bail was denied. Franklin was remanded to Belize Central Prison until his next court appearance on December 19, 2024.
