By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 40-year-old security guard from San Pedro, Jose Cristobal Garcia, was convicted in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court late on Monday after pleading guilty to assaulting his common-law wife during a domestic dispute. Garcia, an employee of Max Security and resident of North San Pedro, admitted to slapping his wife twice in the face, dragging her by her hair, and punching her multiple times in the back of the head.
The incident occurred on October 19, 2024, during an argument while the couple was heading home on a golf cart. The woman reported the assault to the police, who detained Garcia and charged him with harm. In court, Garcia expressed remorse for his actions, stating he should have thought before reacting.
The Senior Magistrate acknowledged Garcia’s early guilty plea and remorse but noted the aggravating factor of slapping his wife multiple times. As a first-time offender, Garcia was spared a custodial sentence and was instead fined $400 plus $5 in court costs, to be paid by December 20, 2024, or face three months in prison.
