By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken faced heightened tensions during his visit to Israel on Wednesday, as his entourage was forced to seek shelter in a hotel amid a Hezbollah rocket attack.
According to USA Today, Israel’s air force intercepted 2 rockets targeting Tel Aviv, activating air raid sirens while Blinken was present.
Reports indicated that Blinken briefly joined senior State Department officials and media in the hotel’s shelter.
In a later statement, Blinken urged Israel to leverage recent military successes, including the death of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar.
“Now is the time to turn those successes into an enduring strategic success… get the hostages home and bring the war to an end with an understanding of what will follow,” he said.
The escalating conflict has also seen casualties in Gaza, with reports of an UNRWA staff member killed by an Israeli strike, and significant economic repercussions anticipated for Lebanon.
Families of hostages met with Blinken, emphasizing the need for renewed negotiations following Sinwar’s death, while Israeli airstrikes continued in southern Lebanon, prompting mass evacuations from Tyre.
