By Aaron Humes: 31-year-old Priscilla Cal, a mother of two children who is a Domestic of the DFC Area, San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye, Belize District, has been charged with child neglect.
She is accused of being found sleeping at a shop stall, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, while her daughters aged six and four were home alone.
The incident took place on October 22. Cal pleaded not guilty and she was offered bail in the sum of $1,000 plus one surety of the same amount which she met. Conditions to her bail is that she is to report to the San Pedro Police Station every Friday, effective next week Friday, November 1. Cal must also not interfere with the children or any other witnesses for the police.
Police were called around 2 in the afternoon where they found Cal with the girls; she had just gotten back after leaving around 11 a.m. A neighbour called police to say she had taken the children into her care.
Police say while speaking with the mother, they smelled the strong aroma of alcohol. The mother and her two children were escorted to the police station where the two children were placed with the Human Services Department as the mother was detained and later charged.
