Ex-wife joins Ivan Ayuso sentencing over forfeiture issue

Posted: Sunday, October 27, 2024. 12:08 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: A third party has joined the High Court’s sentencing and forfeiture proceedings against Ivan Ayuso, ex-Senior Accountant with the National Sports Council who was accused of swindling over a million dollars from the Government of Belize between 2015 and 2018, resulting in charges of three counts of theft and one count of money laundering.

On September 27 before Justice Nigel Pilgrim, Ayuso, represented by attorney Darrell Bradley, entered into a plea bargain where he could face up to five years imprisonment and forfeiture of personal assets to repay the Government.

The application was set to be heard on Friday, but Ayuso’s ex-wife Tanya Savery, represented by Erin Quiros of Balderamos Arthurs LLP, has asked to intercede.

The firm wrote the court expressing that the forfeiture proceedings involve property jointly held by Ayuso and Savery and Savery is thus an innocent third party to these proceedings.

Justice Pilgrim granted Savery time to file her application by November 15, and the court will resume the forfeiting application on November 22.

Savery previously applied for divorce proceedings at the High Court, along with a division of matrimonial assets. The divorce was granted, as well as an order regarding the matrimonial assets, namely the property. The property is now already subject to an order of the Court and Justice Pilgrim said he wished to apprise himself of that order as well before continuing.

As part of the plea bargain that Ayuso entered into, he cannot challenge anything the Crown is attempting to have forfeited.
