Excessive rains and floods cause closure of low bridges and major ferries in Cayo and Orange Walk

By Aaron Humes: As of 11 a.m. today, Sunday, the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) informs that a pair of roads in rural Orange Walk District and areas in Belmopan, Blackman Eddy and Spanish Lookout and in San Ignacio and Greater Cayo are impassable and/or closed, due to ongoing flooding.

The San Roman Road leading to Douglas in northern Orange Walk as well as the San Antonio Road leading to August Pine Ridge is impassable for smaller vehicles.

In Belmopan, all entrances to the J and W area are impassable for smaller vehicles.

The Iguana Creek Bridge is closed as well as the San Ignacio Low-lying Bridge. The ferries at Baking Pot and Xunantunich are closed.

The Hydrological Service reports in Saturday’s Flood Forecast that a flood warning in effect for the Central and Northern region rivers and their tributaries including the Rio Hondo, Mopan, Macal, and Belize Rivers. A Severe Flood Warning is in effect for the Rio Hondo at Blue Creek North and Freetown Sibun on the Sibun River. 

Flood waters will be making their way down the riverine system from upstream areas, municipalities on impacted river systems may see an increase in flood waters (level and extent) in their area. An Excessive Rainfall Watch has been issued for the next 12-24 hours around the country. Urban flooding is expected in areas that are prone to flooding with minimal rainfall volumes. Those areas already experiencing flooding conditions and receiving rainfall, expect that water levels may increase, the flood extent may widen and flooding conditions to persist.
