Mother accused of harboring criminal son released on bail

Posted: Monday, October 28, 2024. 8:40 pm CST.

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Desiree Elizabeth Miller, a 57-year-old babysitter from Lords Bank, Ladyville, is out on bail  after appearing in court on charges of harboring a criminal. Miller, who allegedly sheltered her son, Phillip Guzman, wanted in connection with an aggravated burglary, initially pleaded guilty in Magistrate Court #7 but was later entered as not guilty. The Magistrate decided her initial plea was not accepted after hearing her account and set bail at $800, which Miller met.

Miller explained in court that police never informed her that her son was officially wanted, nor showed her any wanted poster. She claimed officers were forceful during their visits and armed on their second attempt, which led her son to flee through a window. Miller stated she had intended to assist the police, explaining she feared for her son’s safety if he turned himself in due to past rough treatment from officers.

Miller is scheduled to reappear in Court #1 on December 23, 2024.
