Leader of Opposition Moses “Shyne” Barrow files criminal burglary complaint following events at UDP headquarters

By Aaron Humes: Despite vowing just last week not to get involved in what he called the ‘love triangle’ within the United Democratic Party (UDP), Commissioner of Police Chester Williams had to direct police officers to respond to party headquarters on Monday morning after members of the Alliance for Democracy (AFD) managed to get into the premises, in their words, to carry on the business of the party.

On Monday afternoon, the Commissioner at the weekly press conference in Belize City indicated that Leader of the Opposition Moses “Shyne” Barrow – through Deputy Chairman Alberto August – has filed a criminal complaint of alleged burglary over the matter. “That matter will be looked at by the police to see if there is any crime committed. We have to look at the whole issue of the definition of a burglary, which is one who enters a building as a trespasser with an intent to do certain things, which include damage to the building.”

The Commissioner said it was anticipated there would be an issue so police officers went. Despite indicating that he personally would not visit the scene, some reports this evening suggest he has changed his mind at the invitation of the Alliance for Democracy. But how long can police hold the fort? Williams said it depends on when and whether the matter is ventilated in court and comes to a legal solution.
